Obituary of Estella (Auntie) Howey
A remarkable woman and deeply cherished aunt, quietly passed away, surrounded by her loving family, on February 18th in London's Victoria Hospital. Auntie was a true original who made an impression on all she met. Whether it was a newspaper clipping or treasures gleaned from church sales, a book recommendation, or a packet of seeds from her beloved garden, she lived her life thinking of and helping others. Her interests were enthusiastic and eclectic; Canadian first editions, the stock market, penguin figurines and the stars in the night sky. She had an immense curiosity about the world, possessing a truly impressive range of knowledge. She could pick up any instrument and make music, particularly the piano. A party wasn't complete without Auntie at the piano leading everyone in song. She even supplied the music sheets. Children loved Auntie and she had an almost magical ability to connect with them. With her exuberance and love of play, she was always the 'fun grown-up'. Auntie loved to tell a story, and a long and winding road it often was. You never quite knew where you were going, but the trip was always worth it! She was the daughter of John and Mary Howey of Clinton Township, the beloved sister of Joyce, pre-deceased by brothers Mel (London Free Press) and Colonel Ray Howey (R.C.A.F.), and 'Auntie' or 'Aunt Stel' to her many nieces, nephews, and in the last few years to the next generation of great-nieces and nephews. We wish to thank Dr. Hsia, for years of care, and the doctors and nurses of the I.C.U. and ninth Floor of Victoria Hospital, especially Dr. Parry and Karen who took such sensitive and compassionate care of our Aunt. She will be profoundly missed by her sister Joyce and all her family, friends and neighbours. She has truly enriched our lives.
If you have the space, Auntie would love to have a Carolinian tree planted in her memory or donations in Auntie's name to a charity of your choice would be a appreciated. If you wish to share a memory of Estella with the family or send your condolences, please visit www.westviewfuneralchapel.com
