Obituary of Willem "Bill" Jacobus Nicholaas van Welzen

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Willem “Bill” van Welzen, after a long, courageous battle with his health. Bill earned his wings and joined our angels peacefully in the early hours of Tuesday, February 4th, 2020. Loving and cherished father of Kelly (John) van Welzen. The best Papa ever to Brendan, Nicholas and Brooke Johnston. Dear brother to Gini (late Kees) Serrarens and Beth (Bob) McKinlay. Fondly remembered by his niece and nephew Christine & Ken Allen; and his many other nieces, nephews, friends and family. Bill is predeceased by his wife, Ellen van Welzen (née Nutkins, 2005); his parents, Marie & Johannes van Welzen; and his brother, Hans van Welzen (Mary). Bill was a wonderful, caring, helpful man who instantly made you feel welcome. He loved helping people and building things; always willing to jump in and give a helping hand. His vibrant personality and kind ways will be remembered by all who knew and loved him. A very special ‘thank you’ to Beth and Christine, who have been with Dad through every step of his illness. We are forever grateful to the staff of the Dearness Home – 3rd Floor East support and nursing staff for making Dad’s new home a wonderful experience. To the doctors and nurses in the Victoria Hospital - Critical Care Trauma Centre, and especially Dr. Curtis and nurse Danielle who helped us through our last moments with Dad; we cannot thank you enough for your grace and compassion. A funeral service will be conducted at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Monday, February 10, 2020 at 3:00 p.m., with visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in memory of Bill are asked to consider Make-A-Wish Southwestern Ontario or a minor sports organization in your community. “This isn’t goodbye; It’s just so long for a while, until we meet again.”
