Maarten (Martin) Koetsier

Obituary of Maarten (Martin) Koetsier

On Saturday, February 1st, 2020 after a long and courageous battle of 51 years with Multiple Sclerosis, Maarten (Martin) Koetsier passed away peacefully in his 88th year. Loving and devoted husband of 58 years to Margaret (Peggy). Cherished father to his daughter Glynis and her husband Mike Massé. Grandfather to Steven and his fiancée Rebecca. Martin will be sadly missed by his sisters: Henny Meerens, Annefeit Von Lodenstein, Els Koetsier and her partner Len, Gretha and her husband Lodewyk Boots and sister-in-law Ellie Koetsier, all of Holland. Predeceased by his parents Jan and Geerje; his brother Jaap (all of Holland); his brother Gerrit (Gerry) and his wife Margie (of California); and by brothers-in-law Henk Meerens and Bart Von Lodenstein (of Holland). Martin will also be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews in Holland, California and Scotland as well as his cousins in Canada. Martin immigrated to Canada at the age of 18 where he lived with Bart and Meis Geleynse and their four children. Nine years later he met Peggy on a blind date and they were married six months later in California. Martin had a wonderful life traveling Europe, taking cruises in the Caribbean, Alaska and Russia as well as his many bus trips to the casino. There will be no funeral service as Martin had decided many years ago that he would like to donate his body to science in hopes of finding a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. He was always there for trial research and trying new medications knowing that it may not help him, but it may help someone else. Thank you to all the staff at Chelsey Park Nursing Home 4th floor and Dr. Crabbe for your support, hard work and the time you always spent looking after Martin. We will truly miss all of you. Those wishing to make a donation in Martin’s memory are asked to consider the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.
