Obituary of Mabel 'Renee' Irene Wright

Passed away peacefully, at Groves Memorial Hospital in Fergus, Ontario, on Monday, January 13, 2020, Mabel Irene ‘Renee’ Wright, recently of London, at the age of 100. Renee is survived by siblings: Doreen, Maureen, and Brian; sister-in-law Alice; sons: Kenneth “Kip”, Allan (Jill), Robert Glyn (Arlene); and daughter-in-law Maureen (Brian). She leaves behind seven grandchildren: John (Ronda), James, Kelly (Jason), Christine (Lev), Glyn (Michelle), Brienne, and Keegan (Jenn); 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Albert (1991); and siblings: Arthur, Rosie, Ellen, and Pauline. Renee was a gracious, mild-mannered and very resilient woman. She was born in Lancashire, England in 1919. She survived bombings during World War II, contributing to the war effort by working in a munitions factory and being an air raid warden. Renee, her husband Albert and family struck out to start a new life in Canada in 1959, leaving all that was familiar behind. Her greatest battle however, was overcoming breast cancer in the late 60s when cancer treatments were few and chance of survival poor. Her survival is a tribute to the development of the Cobalt Radiation Machine at St. Joseph’s Hospital, London at that time. These trials gave Renee a real zest for life. She always had time to talk to family and friends, wanting to know what they were doing and where they have been. She was a seasoned traveller and an accomplished seamstress and gardener. She would spend hours tending her flower beds, which overflowed with colour all season long. She was: “the lady who always had the twinkle in her eye and so much love”. A wonderful sister, mother, aunt, great-aunt, Nan and grand-Nan, she will truly be missed. A Celebration of Renee’s Life will be conducted at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Monday, January 20, 2020 at 1:00 p.m., with visitation one hour prior. Interment at Woodland Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. To honour Renee’s life, the family encourages you to wear colour. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Groves Hospital Foundation – Palliative Care Unit (Fergus, Ontario) or the St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation (London, Ontario).
