George Johnston

Obituary of George J. Johnston

Passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2019, with three generations of loving family by his side in his 96th year. Predeceased by the love of his life of over 73 years, Mary Johnston (née Hunter) and his parents William and Louisa Johnston, his sister Olive Johnston and brother Bill Johnston. Loving father of Gary (Joy) Johnston, Carol (Bill) Hughson, Kathy (Jim MacDougall) Parker and Janet (Ron) Burton, all of London. Proud Grandpa to seven grandchildren – Julie (Paul) Noad, Ryan (Michelle) Hughson, Matthew (Jennifer) Johnston, Lindsay (Mike) Pinkerton, Brett (Krystie) Parker, Kirsten (Blake) Pronk, and Tyler (Erika) Burton. Adoring great-grandfather to 11 (soon to be 12) great-grandchildren. Dear brother of Louisa Evoy, brother-in-law of Edna Hunter, and caring Uncle to Mark, Debbie, Bruce and Ross. George proudly served Canada during the Second World War by joining the Royal Canadian Air Force, earning the respect and admiration of his fellow airmen, as well as the nickname “Ace” for his accuracy commanding his bomber aircraft. George was eventually gunned down and held as a Prisoner of War in Germany. During his imprisonment, George faithfully penned letters to his parents and his sweetheart, Mary, and was determined to make it back home. He did, and on his first day back on home soil he went directly to the person that never allowed him to give up faith, Mary, and proposed. She said yes, setting in motion over 73 years of love and devotion to family and friends. A funeral service will be conducted at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Wednesday March the 6th, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service. Rev. Paul Browning officiating. Cremation and a private family interment of ashes at a later date. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of George are asked to consider the Mount Zion United Church.
