Obituary of Neal Blackburn

Passed in peace on January 15, 2018 after a short illness in his 92nd year. Neal was the devoted husband of Naomi (Munson) for 58 years, loving father of his daughters, Rae (Eric Keen) and April (Bill Albrecht), ever-proud grandfather of Charlotte, Benji, Teddy, Anthony, and Charlie. Born in Peace River, Alberta, Neal graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Alberta in 1948. He became a professional engineer and worked for 18 years in the petro-chemical industry before joining John Labatt Limited. He was associated with John Labatt for many years in Montreal and London, Ontario, retiring as Vice-President of Engineering Services. Neal then embarked on his second career. Not one for golf, he studied computer programming and started his own online business, designing specialized programs used by engineers all over the world. Neal was Vice-President of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario and designated as a Fellow by Engineers Canada. He was recognized by the YMCA for outstanding volunteer leadership and constructing the Bob Hayward YM-YWCA and also oversaw the development of a new Women’s Community House in London. Neal enjoyed the company of friends at the Probus Club of London, participating in several capacities, including President. Dad loved to travel and share many happy times with his family in South Carolina. Always up for a walk or just a bit of fun, we will miss Dad when we uncork a shiraz, stroll through Springbank Park, fly a kite, or escape for a holiday. An eternal optimist, Dad taught us, “Things always work out.” Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Neal’s life will be held at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London on Sunday, June 10, 2018 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Neal are asked to consider London Health Sciences Foundation.
