Obituary of Vera Feleki

It is with profound sadness that the family of Vera Feleki announces her passing on Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at the age of 92. She is survived by her son George (Karen), daughter Kathy (Shawn), and grandchildren Jessica and Brett. She was predeceased two years ago by her beloved husband, Leslie, whom she dearly missed and with whom she had enjoyed nearly 68 years of marriage. Born in Budapest, Hungary, Vera had always wanted to become a doctor, however her medical studies were interrupted by war. Along with her husband and young son, she fled the country following the Hungarian Revolution. They arrived in London, Ontario in 1957 with no knowledge of English and no possessions other than a firm resolve to make a better life. The transition to life in Canada was difficult. Through hard work and determination, Vera went on to enjoy a successful career working as a researcher in the physiology department at Western University and in the biochemistry department at CPRI. She was a coauthor of several scientific journal articles. Vera enjoyed listening to music, playing piano, and entertaining others in her home. She was proficient in several languages and was fortunate to have many opportunities to travel. Despite enduring many hardships in her early life, Vera always offered kindness and compassion to others. She was a strong, resilient, and loving woman who was extremely proud of her family. Throughout Vera’s life, nothing could bring her more joy than the sight of a child. After her retirement, she delighted in taking on her favourite role, that of grandmother. She chose to be called Amo (Latin for “I love”), a name and sentiment which her grandchildren will always treasure. Her family will forever remember and cherish her boundless affection and generosity. We sincerely thank Elisabeta and her family for their unwavering support, care, and love, and we are grateful for the special bond that they developed with Vera. Special thanks to the staff at Chelsey Park for caring for Vera with kindness and respect. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Vera’s life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to London Urban Services Organization (LUSO) or to the charity of your choice.
