Obituary of John Hayman

Passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Thursday, July 24th, 2014 in his 93rd year. Cherished husband of Phyllis for 66 years. Loving father of John (Jo-Ann) of Exeter, Gayle Detenbeck (Barry) of Bayfield, Marilyn Geen (Douglas) of Belleville, Barbara Dietrich (Ben) of Exeter, and Paul (Nicole) of London. Proud grandfather of thirteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Dear brother of Jim Hayman (Joan) of Victoria, B.C. Predeceased by his sisters Mary Archer (Bill) and Ruth Hayman. John was devoted to his family and believed in the importance of education, as well as highschool and community sports. He was a former teacher and member of the Board of Governors at Albert College, Belleville; teacher and Principal at Quinte S.S.; Past President of C.O.S.S.A., O.F.S.S.A. and the Canadian Highschool Sports Association. John was a founder of Adult Education Programs that resulted in Community Colleges being built. He was a Past President of the Retired Teachers Association in Goderich, as well as a member of the Rotary Club in Goderich and London. John received a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for his contribution to sports in Ontario and was inducted into the Belleville Sports Hall of Fame. John was honoured to have the Resource Centre at Quinte S.S. named after him. Even with all of these accomplishments, John’s greatest joy in life has been his family. A private memorial service will be held along with a private interment at Woodland Cemetery. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of John are asked to consider a charity of their choice.
