Obituary of Fred Doroshenko
Passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Parkwood Hospital on Friday, November 15, 2013, in his 93rd year. Husband of Grace (née Lancaster) for 67 years. Father of Dan (Gayle); grandfather of Jennifer and Craig (Debbie); and great grandfather of Mykaela, Nikolas and Kennedy, all of London. Survived by special nieces Kathy and Rosemary Bishop of Alabama, and by numerous nieces and newphews, and grand nieces and nephews across Canada and family in Belarus. Fred was born in Poland (Belarus) on August 1, 1921 and emigrated with his family in 1929. Son of the late Daniel (Dmitri) and Anna Doroshenko and predeceased by his brothers: Stan (1998), Alex (2012) and John (November 11, 2013). Fred joined the Royal Canadian Engineers at 18 years of age in 1939 and throughout WWII participated in the Dieppe Raid, the second day of the D-Day Landing in Normandy, the Liberation of Holland and eventually going into Germany by the war’s end. Fred worked briefly at Westminster Hospital after returning to Canada, and then joined EMCO (Empire Brass Company) where he worked until his retirement. Fred was a proud life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, joining it in 1946 and holding numerous positions at Byron-Springbank Branch #533. The family extend very special thanks to all the staff at the Parkwood Palliative Care Unit for their care during his brief illness. A memorial service will be conducted at the WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Tuesday, November 19th, 2013 at 3:00 p.m., with visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in memory of Fred are asked to consider the Byron-Springbank Legion’s Poppy Fund.
